Hello Beautiful

Tiffany's Campaign // Vision of Rose Photo

I challenged my 2017-2018 Spokesmodels to think of a cause that means something to them and to plan a photo shoot designated around their chosen campaign. The ladies worked hard and I'm so proud to present their campaigns to you!!

Tiffany: Shattering the Mold on Being Gay

My name is Tiffany Garcia. I am a 28 year old gay woman. I have the outer appearance as some may call "femme" in the gay community, and in the "straight" world, I appear as such. A straight woman. However, I have a wife and have been this way since I first realized at 15 that maybe something was different.

I have chosen to participate in this campaign because I want to bring awareness to the LGBTQ+ community. For as long as I can remember, I have been told "Well you don't LOOK gay." And to me that's confusing. Because what does gay look like? I will be shattering that stereotype during this, and perhaps if you're someone who is indifferent or have hate towards people like me, maybe you'll open your eyes a little wider afterwards.

I've chosen to partner with a local Non-Profit, Side by Side, whom operates out of RVA and has been successful in aiding young teens in Petersburg, Charlottesville and other local areas to feel comfortable being themselves while working towards a world that includes them as normal. As accepted. As human. When I was a teenager, I had someone in my life who is gay, make me feel like I couldn't come to them with the hard questions I had. Why was I feeling this way? Why aren't there any famous people like me? I felt as though I had no one to look to for help. These teens at Side by Side will not be left alone. They can have answers and the help they need. There is nothing worse than the confusion that comes from within and feeling utterly alone. Through many years of abusive relationships, toxic situations and depression, I am standing tall. Happy, healthy and gay.

This is my story. I hope to aid people in seeing that we are all someone with feelings and we need love. We should be treated with respect. As often as people ask me, "When did you know you were gay?" I still get asked "Well when did you decide to be gay?". And trust me when I say, it's not a choice. No one would choose harassment, bullying, discrimination. It is so hard to feel accepted. But that's what we're here for. Acceptance, normalization and transparency. Love us for who we are, and be the voice for people who may not speak for themselves.
