Hello Beautiful

Sara-Lynn's Campaign // Vision of Rose Photo

I challenged my 2017-2018 Spokesmodels to think of a cause that means something to them and to plan a photo shoot designated around their chosen campaign. The ladies worked hard and I'm so proud to present their campaigns to you!!

Sara-Lynn's Hdyrocephalus Campaign

Hydrocephalus is water on the brain and affects 1 in 500 babies born in the US and can affect anyone at any time.  Hydrocephalus colors are Dark Blue and a lighter blue. The Hydrocephalus Ribbon is Dark Blue which represents adults who suffer from the condition and light blue which is for children who suffer and the water droplet on the left side of the ribbon is CSF makes it unique and beautiful.

I was born in 1980 with Hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a condition that occurs when fluid builds up in the skull and causes the brain to swell. The name literally means “water on the brain.” It can cause brain damage, lead to impaired development, physical, and intellectual functions, as well as death. There is no cure. Brain surgery is the only treatment. Affects 1 in 500 babies born. Shortly after birth, I had my first shunt placement. My parents were told horror stories about how I would never walk, talk, or do anything a normal child would do. My parents just took one day at a time and as I grew I started showing them that the doctors didn’t know what they were talking about. I walked early for a milestone and everything after that was either right on target or early! I was checked yearly by my Neurosurgeon in Green Bay, WI. All during my childhood, I remember making those yearly trips to see him and hear about how I was “beating” the odds and he’d say from time to time well she really shouldn’t do this and shouldn’t do that. I’d go home and do all the things he said I shouldn’t do and couldn’t wait to go back and tell him “I did it!” To date, I have had 6 brain surgeries and am currently 1-year surgery free. I still make trips to MCV every 3-6 months to be checked and to make sure I am on the right path. Always striving to show the doctors that I'm gonna do something they didn't think I could do.

I am a Hydro Warrior, a single mom, college graduate, work full time, Girl Scout Troop leader, involved in the local Red Knights Motorcycle Club Chapter 8, I am also the state of Virginia Coordinator for Hydro Angels Over America, amongst many other things.

Looking at the photo on the left, you'd never know that Sara-Lynn is a Hydrocephalus warrior. On the right is the reality... that Sara-Lynn faces a battle daily. Through the images below, we hope you get a small glimpse at Hydrocephalus and what it means to be a Hydro-Warrior!

This image depicts life for Sara-Lynn. When the headaches start, it's all she can do to find comfort. Slight comfort can be found by blacking out any light with an eye mask, a comfy robe and a soft blanket. The pill bottles depict life for someone with Hydrocephalus and the many medications they must take to maintain the pain and symptoms.
